With so many sub-orbital satellites in place, one may be tempted to ask: do the satellites orbit around the earth, or does the earth revolve around satellites? The world belongs to satellites. Cellular communications, military tracking solutions, and everyday direction finders all rely on satellite relays. All cellphones, laptops, netbooks, and GPS navigational units triangular and relay your position and phone calls via sub-orbital satellites. When once they were used as spy satellites (and may still are), today they relay and convey more mundane conversations, directions, and information.

The United States was the first nation to have a working satellite system in orbit, despite the Soviet’s jump in satellite technology (Sputnik). Known as NAVSTAR-GPS, it was developed and maintained exclusively by the United States Air Force. At any given time, the tracking solutions system uses three satellites to triangulate the position of a vehicle or object. It was sanctioned for civilian use by President Reagan and has become a more and more integral part of everyday Americans’ lives. Now, GPS systems are ubiquitous on all cellphones.

The only other nation to have an extensive array of sub-orbital satellites in place, other than the United States, is the Russian Federation. Developed by the Soviets, the tracking solution system, known as GLONASS, was launched in 1976. It currently uses 24 satellites, with 21 required for processing any given object and 3 held in reserve in the event of a malfunction. The GLONASS tracking system uses two signals to calculate position and a third to measure the velocity of a traveling vehicle or projectile. Though considered relatively old by current standards, this satellite system was developed to replace the aging Tsikada System, which could take well up to an hour to find a given target.

The European Union has adopted the use of proprietary satellites via a tracking solutions system known simply as GALILEO. It was unanimously approved by general ratification by the EU General Council in 2007. It is slated to be fully operation by 2013. There will be monitoring and launching bases in both Italy and Germany, and unlike GPS, Galileo is created by the public and not the military, meaning that the military will not have the ability to block it from public use like, for instance, China.

The Chinese, eager to capitalize on the popularity of cellphone usage, has launched its own tracking system, known as COMPASS. When it has completed all of its launches, it will include 35 sub-orbital satellites that span the entire globe. Chinese officials claim there will be two types of service: public and restricted (read as military). It remains to be seen how much GPS access the government will allow private citizens, given its propensity to control even the minutiae of its citizens’ activities. Regardless, the tracking solutions move ever forward.

For your everyday tracking solutions, you can rely on GPS systems available at your nearest box store — or online. Never be lost again, thanks to the eyes in the sky.

Have you ever noticed that there seems to be a huge abundance of refurbished GPS devices for sale, in just about every online retailer that you can find? It is really no big surprise, considering the popularity of the hand held refurbished devices, and especially the automotive GPS devices.

What are the reasons behind this deluge of refurbished navigation GPS on the market? Well, that brings us to the important points of WHY so many GPS devices (along with any electronic devices in general) end up being labeled as “refurbished”. Oddly enough, some of the refurbished GPS devices have actually never even had a problem at all, and in some cases, they are still brand new, literally still factory sealed. Take a look at these reasons why any product could labeled as “refurbished”:

1. For one reason or another the product was sent back to the place of purchase, which means that they returned the item to the store that they bought it from within 30 days of the purchase date. There could have been some defect in the GPS, but this can also not the case; sometimes people just don’t want the product that they bought.

2. The manufacturer created too many of the specific model and needs to get ride of some of their inventory to make room for more. When this happens, the store will either sell the product for a clearance price, or deliver the unit to it source; when the product is sent back to the manufacturer, a business decision needs to be made about how to best handle the new inventory, this sometimes has the outcome of the device getting labeled “refurbished”, and then put the units back out on the market at a marked down price. In some cases these “refurbed” products will have never been opened, meaning that the discount is for no reason at all.

3. It could be that the unit is left over because it was a “display model”. When this is the case, the product eventually gets sent back to the manufacturer; the manufacturer then inspects (and repairs, if necessary) the product, and labels it as refurbished.

4. The device’s packaging was opened by a customer. If this happens and the store doesn’t want to deal with the unit themselves they send it back to the manufacturer who reseals it and labels it refurbished.

5. Shipping damage. When this happens, it usually just means that only the box that the product was in got damaged, but if anything other than the product was damaged (accessories, or the actual unit), it is completely fixed or replaced by the manufacturer.

6. And finally, a reason for a product to be labeled refurbished is that there was an actual defect in the unit. This is can be a rare scenario. When a product has a defect or cosmetic damage it is sent back to the manufacturer for repair, and if they are able to repair the item’s cosmetic or mechanical problem they do so; once the repair is done the GPS is as good as new, and some might argue it is now actually less likely to become defective than the non refurbished products sitting on the shelves of the electronics outlets; they argue this because refurbished devices generally undergo a battery of tests.

In examining all these reasons we can see that refurbished GPS devices are probably just as good as “new” devices. Not every device out there is going to be great, but there are a lot of excellent units just waiting to be purchased at rock bottom prices.

Since we live in a fast paced world, it’s hard to keep up with today’s technology. Take the GPS for example. It’s something that came from nowhere and flooded consumer’s households in the blink of an eye. All it took was a little piece inside of a cell phone’s SIM card and many families could utilize them. The most important part to them was whether or not they can set themselves apart from stand alone features.

GPS is offered on most of the newest Sim free mobile phones as long as you have access to a 3G network, but is it as good as a stand alone GPS unit like the hand held Garmin units or the ones built into cars? The simple answer is not yet. Cell phones try to be a lot of things all at once: camera, keyboard, MP3 player, video game console, GPS unit, oh yeah – and a telephone. The result is they are not the best at any of these things compared to a stand alone unit.

Since mobiles are so spread out, they can’t focus on the best product of one feature. Plus, having a stand alone like the ones you see in cars are much safer when driving. Granted you may have a passenger to help you, but in most cases using a cell phone for GPS purposes could leave you in an accident or worse. If you are using a stand alone the only time your eyes are off the road is to glance over or use the voice directions option.

So the stand alone unit is better for the car. But then again, when you park the car, you take the pink mobile phones with you while you are not likely to lug both the phone and the GPS, unless you have a lot of pockets. And cargo pants are just not in this year.

Even with all the debate that surrounds which one to choose, both industries are growing like crazy. While this may be true, you don’t find too many people who buy one of each. Instead they feel that since they have an option with their mobile phone, a stand alone is not necessary, even if it’s not as good. This is because mobile phones don’t charge anything extra for GPS tracking.

Market analysts say that the stand alone GPS market will continue to grow for a few more years as the prices are lowered, but that it will drop off drastically as people upgrade to the latest generations of smart phones and the 3G network coverage is completed. At that point the cell phone GPS systems will be improved enough to compete with the stand alones in all but screen size. And the negative for the phone there is countered by its portability and multi functionality.

The hand held GPS will inevitably go the way of the PDA, which was replaced by the cell phone as soon as smart phones, like the Blackberry, started coming equipped with decent keyboards and useful software.

Whether GPS will be in your new car or you’re purchasing it for and existing car, you need to consider how much you will actually use your system. Even if you save it for emergency use alone, it is quite possible that in an emergency this incredible device will be worth ten times what you originally paid for it because it could save jobs, time, or even lives (particularly if you are lost and searching for a hospital). It’s hard to put a price tag on the comfort that owning a device such as this would bring but it is definitely worth the $500-$1,000 that is currently being charged. Keep in mind that when these systems first hit the market $1,000 was on the ultra low end.

Unfortunately, many people purchase these systems because they seem like a good idea at the time, but they never really get their money’s worth. Very few investments in technology are worth the money if you don?t invest your time into learning what they can do.

On the other end of the spectrum however, you have people who could get helplessly lost and flustered finding their way out of the driveway on dark and moonless nights. Using GPS is like having an extra pair of eyes. While you may not get the top of the line system that has the ability to help you parallel park your car, you may get one that is nice enough to help you figure out where you are and where you’re going. That alone makes the purchase money well spent.

While having a GPS system installed in your vehicle is great when you find yourself lost in the woods, a handheld GPS device can also help you find alternate routes when traffic is busy on your traditional drive to the grocery store. They can help you avoid roads that have been closed due to maintenance, or even help you find a quick way around road work that is being performed along your route. These devices can also help you find shorter routes to events that you may not have been aware existed before.

If you’ve been in the market for a car, truck, or SUV recently, no doubt you’ve seen the vast number of vehicles sporting shiny new auto global positioning systems (GPS) as part of an package upgrade. These systems are invaluable when you find yourself stuck in slow-moving traffic or when roads are closing due to nasty weather or traffic pile ups. They also come in equally handy when faced with every day driving.

If you never use this system and only get it because it looks cool, then you definitely are not getting your money’s worth. Technology is only good when it’s useful to someone. Unused, it is assisting no one and is essentially a waste of money.

I have absolutely no regrets about purchasing a Global Positioning System (GPS). While I can’t promise that you will love your GPS as much as I love mine (all systems are not created equal), I can assure you that your driving, particularly on long road trips, will go much more smoothly with one.

Flying an airplane is relatively simple, keep it flying straight and level and you’re fine. Landing an airplane is a bit more complicated and requires a few more hours of training. Another item that’s going to take a lot of hours of work to master is navigation. GPS has simplified this to some degree, but it’s still a fine art you’ll want to know as a pilot. If you can’t navigate properly, you may find yourself flying into an area you’re not supposed to fly into.

Combining your sectional with a VOR will keep you out of trouble and on course through most situations. VOR stands “very high frequency omnidirectional range” system and comes in three different varieties. There is the VOR, the VOR/DME and then a VORTAC. Each of these is different, but work on the same technology. Radio signals transmitted out from the VOR in 360 degrees. These are also called “radials” and help to identify your location in relationship to the VOR station. We’ll explain more about that in a minute.

It’s very important to remember that VOR transmission can be clocked by mountains and lose their accuracy. If you have a direct line between your aircraft and the VOR station, you should be fine. If you’re looking at your sectional and can’t figure out why you can’t pick up the VOR signal, try gaining a little altitude. Your Airport and Facilities Directory will keep you updated on any known obstructions, so check that as well if you’re having trouble.

There are actually three different types of VOR stations depending on your location and where you’re flying. The first one is the Terminal VOR or TVOR and should only be used when you’re within 25 nautical miles of the transmitting station and below 1000′ above ground level (AGL). The low altitude VOR is designed to be used accurately within 40 nautical miles and between 1000′ and 18,000′ AGL. The last is the HVOR or high altitude VOR. It’s accurate at various altitudes and, depending on topography, up to 130 nautical miles.

VOR stations are only half of the system used to navigate using this approach. The other have is in your aircraft and consists of a radio receiver with an antenna and some sort of VOR indicator to put these transmission in a format you can use. The VOR indicator is a round dial with a white needle that lines up vertically when you’ve put in the correct radial. Your instructor will teach more about how this works.

Most people find the best system for them is GPS. But, don’t become too dependant on it. It’s not a bad idea to always use your VOR’s as a back up, so you can stay fresh on their operation. If you really want to stay sharp, consider the GPS “INOP” and fly with the VOR only. You never know when you’re going to have something go wrong on the GPS and you’ll NEED that old trusty VOR to get you to the nearest airport safely.

The Garmin Forerunner 205 is a wrist-mounted GPS unit, but in reality it’s so much more than that. Whether your preferred outdoor sport is running, cycling, cross-country skiing, or even windsurfing, you’ll find that the Forerunner 205 is a multi-function training tool that can give you the data that you need to be able to get the most out of the time that you spend in the great outdoors. By giving you accurate data in regards to your speed, distance, time, and pace when you need it, the Forerunner 205 will make you wonder how you ever managed to train without it.

The Forerunner 205 is designed with functionality in mind, wrapping comfortably around your wrist so as to avoid the awkwardness that often comes with attempting to use a wrist-mounted GPS device. The buttons used to access different sets of data are large enough that they can easily be pressed even while running or cycling, and the display is large and clear enough that you’ll be able to read your data with just a glance. There are several screens worth of data that you can cycle through, letting you find just the information that you want and preventing everything from being crammed together in an attempt to fit it all onto a single screen.

Because it’s a Garmin product, the GPS capabilities of the Forerunner 205 are second to none. A number of other wrist-mounted GPS units suffer from inaccuracies or signal outages when you get too far out into the country because they simply aren’t built to be able to pick up unboosted signals. The Forerunner 205, however, has an extended antenna that’s cleverly hidden away within the wrist strap itself, allowing it to give you accurate positioning data when other units can’t. It even saves this GPS data so that you can review it later, letting you see exactly where your course takes you and giving you the option to map out those courses which you enjoy for later use.

One other major advantage of the Garmin Forerunner 205 is the fact that it comes with an easy-to-use PC interface so that you can download all of your training data onto your computer at home. From there you can upload it to MotionBased.com or use the included training software to map courses, review training data, and see what portions of your training still need a little bit of work.
