The Boy on the Bus by Deborah Schupack: What is frustrating is that this novel was full of potential, and Deborah Schupack demonstrates an obvious literary talent. Yet I finished the book very dissatisfied with it. Not only has Meg not learned anything new, but neither had I.
The Big Over Easy by Jasper Fforde: The Big Over Easy is silly, entertaining, and unlike any murder mystery you’ve read before. Whether you enjoy reading humor or mystery, Jasper Fforde can satisfy both tastes with this novel. If you enjoy them both, especially if they’re done over the top, then The Big Over Easy is right up your alley. Just go along for the ride with Jack Spratt and Mary Mary and be prepared for non-stop plot twists and a fairy tale ending. Oh, did I mention the beanstalk?
Arthur & George by Julian Barnes: Arthur & George succeeds on many levels. Besides the unfolding of the lives of these two men and the depiction of England a century ago, Julian Barnes touches on timeless themes. George’s conviction based on circumstantial evidence is chilling when it is shown how any behavioral trait can be used to explain criminal intent or guilt. George was convicted more for who he was than any evidence that pointed to his guilt. Arthur struggles with love and responsibility. Julian Barnes ties it all together, weaving their stories within the confines of the era and the universal challenges of life, love, and family. It’s an engrossing story, expertly told, and enthused with the idea that with men like Arthur Conan Doyle, some of the miscarriages of life can be undone.
The Athenian Murders by Jose Carlos Somoza: Jose Carlos Somoza does a wonderful job weaving all of this together, keeping all the mysteries beguiling as they begin to wrap themselves around each other. The reader hopes that Heracles finds the key to his murder investigation as well as hoping the translator finds the key within the story. The philosophical arguments between Heracles and Diagoras (as well as others at Plato’s Academy) become tiresome at points, yet within in them Somoza hides the key that brings everything together. The story, or stories actually, come to a surprising and satisfying conclusion, leaving no doubt as to the mastery of Somoza’s storytelling. As with all good mysteries, all the pieces fall into place in hindsight once the book comes to an end. Unpredictable, intelligent, and a tour guide through ancient Greece, The Athenian Murders is different from anything else you might read, and in the end, you’ll be glad it is.
Bones to Ashes by Kathy Reichs: While the story line in Bones to Ashes can be a bit disturbing, it moved along quickly with enough mystery and plot twists to keep the mind engaged. This is a good book to pick up on a rainy weekend or take to the beach to lose oneself for a while.
The Book of Air and Shadows by Michael Gruber: The Book of Air and Shadows never seems to take itself too seriously, which adds to its enjoyment. Michael Gruber has delivered a novel where he hides universal truths among the treasure hunt. The result is much more fun than the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Perhaps that’s his next novel.
The Dante Club by Matthew Pearl: The Dante Club is an excellent debut novel for Matthew Pearl. It’s a bit uneven at times, but once it hits its stride, it’s an entertaining and intelligent story that holds your attention until everything comes to a satisfying conclusion. A previous knowledge about Dante or the Boston poets isn’t necessary to enjoy this fine novel. I look forward to what Matthew Pearl might have in store next for us.
Bay of Souls by Robert Stone: If you read this book just following the storyline, this novel will frustrate you. If you keep peeling back the layers, more ideas bubble forth, some like little quick jabs to your mind. You can choose to wander aimlessly through this book, or you can put your soul on the line and dive in deeper into the Bay of Souls.

Do you think that spending time in traditional classrooms is not worth it? For many people, that is true. For example, a test is coming up and the students are asked to memorize a lot of dates and names. However, after taking the test, they will probably forget 90% of those dates and names. That’s what most students do every time they have exams. If you are one of these people, you will find traditional history lessons boring, so home schooling, which focuses more on the history of the world will surely catch your fancy.
Just simple memorization is not enough to realize the significance of historical, famous people and important events. Through home schooling in history, you can learn about the different cultures of the past in a different, but interesting way – that is your own way! Through the study of history, you will also understand the current situation of the world.
If you think that home schooling is the best option for your child’s learning, you must also be prepared to take on some responsibilities. Since there will be no teacher physically present, you will have to oversee your child’s educational progress yourself.
Let’s just suppose that your child is interested in a particular sport. Through combining history and home schooling, you can start by just hanging a map on the wall of your child’s schoolroom and mark the location of his favourite sports team. Make sure that you track all the team’s activities and schedules. Then, you could return to history lessons by reading biographies of the various athletes, who had been popular in the particular sport that your child follows. Aside from that, you can also examine the history of that specific sport and discover where it started, its inventor, and the other things happening in that particular time in history.
For instance, if your child likes baseball, you could teach your child about the history of Negro Leagues, government hearings on the use of steroids, and other favourite sports during that time. Just remember that you can apply this concept to any interest like dances and inventions. You can also have conversations with your child concerning current affairs or read interesting historical works and other books. Aside from that, you could also watch documentaries together with the rest of the family. There are various resources that your child can use while home schooling, like TV, maps, books, a globe, an atlas, and encyclopedias. Due of the exciting adventures that you and your child will read about and see on film, he/she will find it easier to remember the names and dates of the history lessons. After all, education is better when it is done in an interesting way.
These ways are advisable if your child is still young, however when your child is older, you should select a home schooling program that is suitable for his/her particular age group. The programs are pitched at the elementary, high school, and even college levels. You simply have to search online for these different programs. One advantage of these programs is that you can tailor them to suit the needs of your child. However, you must see to it that all the modules are studied by your child.
After you and your child have decided to give home schooling a shot, you must be ready to endure some changes to your lifestyle. The educational will now take place in your home not at a remote school and through the various resources that you want to use, which should include a computer and the Internet.

This book review is for Enchanted Afternoon, by Susan Wiggs. It is a historical romance set in Saratoga Springs in the eighteen hundreds. The story starts out with a very solid beginning. Just after reading the first sentence, I was pulled into the world the author had created.
I immediately was drawn to the main character, Helena, who was in mourning over her father’s death, dealing with an abusive husband – who is also a Senator – and was reintroduced to her true love from almost a decade ago. The said true love also happened to be the real father to her son. All of these dynamics were introduced in the first two chapters. It was enough to keep me enthusiastically reading for more.
As the novel progresses, the level of intensity continues to roller coaster in up and down motions, which is as a novel should be – no matter the genre. I enjoyed reading about a woman from that time period trying to become independent and raising her son on her own. I also liked the side characters, who were mostly other battered women dealing with the blows that life had dealt them. It gives the reader the ability to ponder on what women in general had to deal with in those times, especially since women’s rights were minimal at that time.
I liked the overall story, even the side plots that I usually to refer to as “fillers”. Fillers are used when the main story is not quite enough to keep a reader enticed or to help lengthen the book. My main dilemma in loving the book was with the slowly rekindling romance between Helena and Michael, her lover from nine years ago. I understand that Helena would be extremely cautious to jump into another relationship after leaving her abusive husband.
I even understand that trusting a man who broke your heart once already is to take a rather large risk. However, the way the story and characters were written, I felt that Michael had redeemed himself rather quickly and Helena was being too stubborn to see it.
There were also the “convenient dilemmas” that occur in almost any romance novel. You romance readers know what I am talking about: just when the hero/heroine is about to forgive their true love for whatever had been keeping them apart, some little “convenient dilemma” pops up that makes them distrust their lover once again.
This draws out the story a bit longer and keeps the readers held in exasperation and anticipation. For me, sometimes this method can work, but generally I feel that the happenstances are just a little too convenient. With Enchanted Afternoon, I would have to go with the latter opinion. It just did not quite work. I thought the couple could have reconciled a little sooner in the story and still kept the same climax in the end without it becoming too cheesy. So the big question is, will I add this book to my library? While it was an enjoyable read, I doubt I will read it again. Therefore, no. I will not be keeping this novel.

If a survey by the National Center For Education Statistics is to be believed, roughly 1.1 million children took home schooling in 2005 alone. That is a lot of children. Not so long ago, homeschooling used to be an extreme statement – something like a declaration of independence.
It was the (right-wing|conservative Christians who pushed for homeschooling in the ’80s and legalized it in every State. But the typical homeschooler of today is not religiously motivated.
Later surveys indicate that parents are actually fed up with the public school system where a lot of the learning is superficial and compulsory. They are also concerned about the damaging environment in school, which ranges from drugs and abuse to negative peer pressure.
As a result, we have a surprising mix of people who form the homeschooling world of today. They cut across all religious creeds and all regional borders. Their main goal is providing meaningful and productive education through a means that strengthens the bond between all the members of the family.
All these families have one major thing in common – a long enduring commitment to the sanctity of childhood. The children of these families are given a primary position. Many believe, and, probably, rightly so, that home schooling allows parents to bring up their children in a more natural and nurturing environment.
Public schools can make a child anxious, diffident and downright mean. Children who get their education at home are protected from these damaging, negative influences until they reach an age where they can deal with them.
Home-schooling draws the whole family into the almost religious task of teaching. Everyone is put to work. The parents together form a bond with the children. Any experience can be turned into an educational experience. Both the parents are aware of exactly what is going into their child’s education.
Parents also have a greater say over the kind of religious and moral values that the child is learning. Even watching a film together can become an educational experience. Trips to the libraries, zoos, museums and other places become educational as well as recreational.
A home-schooling family is primarily dependent on the income of one earning member. That means that often spending has to be curtailed and proper planning of expenditure is a must. This helps to bring the family members together and everybody becomes involved in the process of saving money.
Just having a parent at home to supervise, to nurture and to care for the children brings with it a lot of love and caring. Even the husband chips in and there just is no room for boredom.
Yes, problems still do crop up, and there will be a lot of misgivings in your mind, but when you know that your kids can always count on you, and your kids know it too, then homeschooling becomes a very rewarding experience.

The Tale Of Despereaux is based on a book. The movie scene is a magical place called the kingdom of Dor and one day, after an accident the King is left with a broken heart and the townspeople are left without their favorite kind of soup! The sun fades away and all of a sudden a mouse comes in.
Despereaux is a mouse that was banished to a dungeon for talking to a human. Over the course of the movie he makes friends with Pea, a princess whose father is really sad and is rescued by a rat. He learns to read and then Pea is captured and he finds out that he is the only one that can save her.
The Tale of Despereaux is an amazing story of bravery and is great for young children. It teaches them values that even parents love to learn from the lovable mouse. The movie has music in it that goes great with the plot and the friendship between these animals and the human world makes this story great.
The movie also has many well-known actors protraying the roles. Sigourney Weaver acts as narrator and Matthew Broderick plays Despereaux the brave mouse. The rat Roscuro is voiced by Dustin Hoffman. Emma Watson plays the Princess Pea. Miggery Sow is played by Tracey Ullman.
This movie is one that will be on repeat for years. It is full of excitement and values taught in an amazing way with great characters that children and adults will both enjoy.

The next chapter in the Terminator saga is less then a month away. With so much excitement building I feel it is necessary to review the first three chapters in the story.
The first movie simply titled The Terminator was released in 1984 and almost immediately became a blockbuster hit. It stood out from the pack with its over the top special effects and its time traveling story. It was a huge success and spawned two, and now three sequels as well as a television show on Fox. The first movie was released on VHS and later on DVD. It included a minimal amount of bonus features on its initial DVD release, but would later be re-released as a special addition.
A few years later, in 1991, the sequel, T2: Judgment Day would release into theatres. It was an immediate success, far surpassing the first movie and breaking box office records on the way to be the summers biggest movie. It kept what was great about the first movie and expanded on the Terminators lore.
In T2 Arnold is still a Terminator, but as John Connor’s guardian. When the rumors came out I couldn’t believe it, they had changed what everyone was expecting. However, the special effects far surpassed the first movie and the things we saw were unlike anything seen before. It was a technological breakthrough and has become standard practice since. The DVD, packaged in a metallic collector’s sleeve, was full of history and special features, that we have now come to expect.
Ten years later, Rise of The Machines was released. It was considered a flop, by Terminator standards. However, with almost $400 million is ticket sales, it would have been considered a huge success for any other franchise. The DVD, was just as great as the first two releases, full of extras. i am positive that a special Blu-ray version of the first three movies, will be on the way soon.
Hopefully, the glory to the franchise can be renewed through this new movie coming out next month.

We all know how buying used college textbooks save a lot of money. It helps you keep up with your lessons even though you have a limited budget. Used college textbooks allow the not-so-well-off students to have a shot at finishing their education in the long run.
When you buy used college textbooks, there are some things you need to do first to make sure that you are not getting ripped off. Here are some of them:
1. Search the Internet for online and offline bookstores that specialize in selling used textbooks. This will save you time, money, and effort. Instead of going around town in search of a good store, you will know where you’re headed at before stepping out of the house.
2. Ask friends or people you know who were previously in the same course you are currently taking. Chances are they used the same textbooks. You can buy it from them at a low price. The added bonus here is the notes scribbled on the pages or highlighted texts.
3. Check out the university or college bookstores if they sell used college textbooks. The ones they sell can be cheaper than those sold at bookstores.
4. Before paying for the book, check first for torn or missing pages. A textbook with torn and missing pages is of no use.
5. Look for better bargains. It wouldn’t hurt to look at another store that sells cheaper used college textbooks. You’ll never know what you can find.
These tips will surely help you find the textbook you need. Remember though that you should not expect a nice-looking book. It’s normal for used college textbooks to look worn. As long as it’s still readable and is not missing important pages, then you’re good to go. The important thing here is that you will have a reference material you can use to study your lessons. How they look is not important; it’s the inside that matters.
